Workshop title

Shen: contemporary practice and classical texts

Workshop times

Sunday 11.30-16.00

Workshop description

Some patients speak directly of anxiety, depression, insomnia and agitation, expressing an emotional and mental discomfort; others describe this ‘feeling unwell’ through sensations such as pain, weight, swelling, knots. The connection between emotional, mental and somatic layers is always there.

In this seminar Elisa will discuss evaluation of psycho-emotional disorders and their treatment by acupuncture. She will refer to the classics to see how they consider emotions and approach their excessive imbalances and plunge into our contemporary clinical practice. She will go through classical concepts which relate strongly with shen神disorders, such as yu 郁 (constraint), fanzao烦 躁 (agitation and restlessness), bentunqi 奔豚气 (running piglet), diankuang 癫 狂 (madness), looking at their link with modern definitions like anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and psychotic outbursts. She will present these patterns from a daily practice point of view and suggest some treatments including ‘shen axis’ points to regulate the emotions.
