Workshop title

Slow deep breathing - a powerful tool to support practitioner wellbeing and patient healing

Workshop times

Saturday 10.00-11.00

Workshop description

Slow, deep breathing is a mainstay of traditional cultivation practices, from Chinese qigong to Indian yoga and Christian liturgical chanting. In Chinese medicine, deep abdominal breathing is said to promote health and longevity, cure disease, and help lower agitated Heart fire into the cooling embrace of Kidney water, restoring yinyang harmony and pacifying the shen. Recent research supports and explains these extraordinary effects in terms of enhanced oxygenation, autonomic nervous system balancing and the development of optimum (coherent) states of body and mind. Easy to learn, and easy to teach to patients in the clinic, coherent breathing can play a vital supportive role in healing physical, mental and emotional disorders. This presentation will discuss breathing both from the scientific and from traditional Chinese self-cultivation perspectives, and will include simple breathing practices to support practitioner wellbeing and enhance patient healing.

Peter will also lead the qigong sessions on Saturday and Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon.
