Degenerative osteoarthritis of lower back and knee joint treated with TCM

Workshop description

Dr. Zippelius will give a short introduction to the physiology and pathology of locomotor system according to TCM. In order to be able to make a differentiated diagnosis it is necessary to reflect on the role of external pathogenic factors, organ-meridian relationship (internal external relation), yin-yang balance, Qi blocked in meridians, postural aspects, emotional underlay and the role of daily habits and their impact on the lower back and knee. Participants will learn to clinically examine the lower spine, hips and knee joints and to elaborate individualised treatment strategies for degenerative pain syndrome of the lower spine and osteoarthritis of the knee joint. An integrative treatment protocol combines acupuncture with internal and external application of Chinese herbs, specific hand techniques, physical exercise and, in severe cases, surgical treatment.

Speaker biography

Dr. Karl Zippelius is head of the TCM ambulatory at the Austrian Institute for Sports Medicine (Österreichisches Institut für Sportmedizin ÖISM). He is part of the medical team at Sportmedic Clinic in Wien, where he collaborates with Dr. Brandner, staff member of the Austrian national ski team, to integrate surgery and TCM for the better treatment of cruciate ligament injuries. He also operates a private practice in Florence, with a focus on TCM traumatology and orthopaedics. After obtaining his degree in human medicine from the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and the Free University Berlin, Dr. Zippelius studied Traditional Chinese Medicine at the “Schule Ost des Arbeitskreises für TCM” in Berlin, as well as at the TCM University in Chengdu, China. He continued his training in Chinese orthopaedics and traumatology at the Orthopaedic Military Hospital of Sichuan Province, the Sichuan Tianxiang TCM Orthopaedic Hospital, the Dance Injury Research Institute in Chengdu, and the Sichuan Tianpeng Academy of TCM -Orthopaedics & Longevity.
