Clinical Use of 68 Single Herb Preparation used in Korean National Health Care for 30 years

Workshop times

Workshop description

EU legislation on pharmaceutical products also applies in general to traditional herbal medicines. However, in 2004, a simplified registration procedure allowing the registration of herbal medicinal products was introduced. It did not require proof of safety and efficacy through clinical trials as long as there was sufficient evidence of the medicinal use of the product throughout a period of at least 30 years, including at least 15 years in the community.  But the legislation still limits clinical translation of herbal medicinal products because much of the literature addresses the effectiveness and use of combination of medicinal herbs rather than processed herbal products.

This lecture will share an overview of pre-modern era literature, clinical practice, and safety profiles of the 68 single herbal products, which are different from medicinal herbs, used in Korea for the past 30 years and may shed some light on how these herbal products could be utilised more in European countries.
